The greatest increase in Kal-el's abilities came with the close of the second world war and the advent of the atomic age. With the massive global destruction people had witnessed and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Superman was shown as withstanding an atomic blast, just to stay ahead of the curve.
